Sarah Gray Styling- Sliding into AW Season

As if by magic, we find ourselves welcoming in gorgeous new collections for AW. One of the many great things about Sam and the brands she stocks at Black Diamond Boutique is that we are not expected to buy our thick winter coats at the end of August/ early September! Sam does a brilliant job of selecting items which allow us to ease ourselves into Autumn.

So with that in mind, here are a few ideas to transition your wardrobes from Summer to Autumn;

Layering - we forget sometimes that we have garments which are cross seasonal - meaning we can use them in different ways throughout the year. We all do it, we compartmentalise the items in our wardrobe; top X only goes with jeans, jacket Y only goes with formalwear and so on.

So, how about this gorgeous new Sofie Schnoor tan coloured dress (1) Wear it now with your fashion trainers or Birkenstocks and a camisole under it if you prefer. Then as it cools down, the Sofie Schnoor leggings from Spring season would be terrific. Or from your own wardrobe; your black coated skinnies or black leggings/tights. Teamed with an ankle boot and your striped Breton long sleeved t-shirt, turn back the cuffs on the dress so the striped sleeve is visible.

Colours - it’s so easy to reach for black once the cooler days arrive but you know, this season, we are seeing a fantastic colour alternative. Tan/Camel is such a wonderful neutral. We’ve already seen the dress above but look also at the fab jeans from Saint Tropez (2). You will be able to wear, cream, white, navy, browns, reds, blues even black with this shade. So, rather than choose the blue or black jeans  you usually go for, why not give these Saint Tropez tan jeans a try - most of your existing tops will look fab with them.

You will also see dark chocolate browns this season - in my experience, many clients shy away from brown simply because they are not sure how to wear it. I tell them to treat it just like black. It is a neutral and therefore will look fabulous with most colours -some of which you may never have teamed together before.

*Just a small note that if you have cool undertones in your skin, keep the tan/browns to you lower half*

Back to work - are you heading back to work in September? Many of us are and having lived in our casual wear for so long, we are wanting to smarten ourselves up a but for the return.  You might already have trousers and skirts and be looking for a blouse to ring the changes. This gorgeous cream Sofie Schnoor blouse (3), with it’s gold metallic pattern is a fab piece. Teamed under a blazer or biker style jacket, it will be a versatile addition to a work wardrobe.

You might have an abundance of tops, (generally we do because these are easier to buy) but find the lower half trickier to dress. This faux leather midi skirt from Great Plains (4) is a winner for the Autumn. A heeled court shoe now or a wedge boot when it’s cold, means it will last all season. You’ll be able to dress it up with a blouse (the SS one above looks incredible with it!) or team it with a knit for a more casual look.

As the months get colour, we’ll be looking at staying stylishly warm.

Until then, stay safe & well.
